Game on AMathsTeacherWrites (blog)
I wrote a selection of PPoint slides for a range of topics last year. The slides each contain questions and often video links to news topics. They’re intended as 5 minute fillers – breaks from a main lesson task.
A great post from Wait, But Why? on visualising quantities. Some handy graphics for use in lessons.
This article on the mental floss website discusses the distance Super Mario had to walk to get to Princess Peach in the game called … Super Mario. Within the article are links to super mario maps, (also Zelda, GTA and Doom maps!!) and the maths to figure out the distance is pretty straight forward. You could easily pinch a few maps and do your own investigations into scale, distance etc with a very obvious narrative to engage students.
This is a great website with thought provoking questions about estimation, with small clues to help students think mathematically and make more of an educated guess. It’s updated daily, so in theory you could use it for… every starter ever.
